A few factors to consider with diamonds<\/p>\n

Diamond Cut <\/strong><\/p>\n

Literally how the diamond is cut, there are a few main types plus variations. An ideal cut diamond reflects light internally in an ideal way. It will seem to have a fire to it. The only compromise here is that there may be more of the raw stone cut away in order to achieve the ideal cut; you pay for the stone that was removed.<\/p>\n

Other styles of diamond cut reflect light differently, but the ideal is considered the best option. Other cuts allow more of the original stone to be kept, and they may suit some settings.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Diamond Clarity<\/strong><\/p>\n

An \u2018F\u2019 category diamond has no flaws. These are extremely rare. Other diamonds may be:<\/p>\n

IF \u2013 surface level blemishes, but no internal flaws.<\/p>\n

VVS1 or VVS2 \u2013 Perfect to the naked eye, but with imperfections visible with magnification.<\/p>\n

VS1 or VS2 \u2013 Perfect to the naked eye, but with imperfections visible under 10x magnification.<\/p>\n

S1 or S2 \u2013 Perfect to the eye, but with imperfections seen with mild magnification.<\/p>\n

I1, I2, I3 \u2013 Imperfect, and probably best avoided.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Diamond Weight<\/strong><\/p>\n

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. A carat is a metric unit equivalent to 20% of a gram.<\/p>\n

If all things are equal a heavier stone (more carats) is worth more. But things are usually not equal. A flawless, ideal cut diamond is often worth more than a larger diamond with minor flaws and inferior cut.<\/p>\n

Diamond colour<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ostensibly white diamonds can be very mildly coloured yellow.\u00a0 Higher quality diamonds are perfectly white; most diamonds have a mild yellow tint<\/p>\n

The setting of a diamond affects the perception of colour. A slightly yellow diamond will look clear when in a gold setting. The same diamond will seem slightly yellow when set in silver or platinum.<\/p>\n
