Cleaning Diamond Jewellery

Darum

A diamonds are extremely hard it would be easy to assume that they are immune to damage. But diamonds are often housed in gold settings, and it is all too easy for these to be damaged. Additionally, other jewellery can easily be damaged by poor cleaning techniques. It is best to be cautious, if only because other substances with the diamond can be harmed.

Plain Soap and Water

A ring that has only diamonds set in gold can be effectively cleaned with plain soap and warm water. Let the ring soak for 15 minutes and gently rub it with a soft toothbrush (do not use this toothbrush for any other purpose). Avoid any soap with fancy ingrediants wuch a moisturiser, as these tend to leave deposits on the jewellery. Rinse the ring in cold water when finished.

Commercial Dips.

Some commercial dips are available for jewellery. Different dips are designed for gold, silver and other metals. Never try to use a dip designed for one metal to clean another type of metal, as it can be harmful. Always make sure the dip is appropriate for diamonds.

Read instructions for the particular dip, and follow carefully. Avoid using metal bowls as these may react with the cleaning dip.

Ultrasonic cleaners

These clean by vibration. They are quite effective, but some jewellery express hesitation about using vibrations to clean fine parts; there is a possibility of vibtrations causing gemstones to come loose.

Items with glued-in gemstones can be problematic; the glue can weaken in some cleaning fluids or hot water.

Pearls and some other precious jewellery can be severely damaged by many cleaning fluids. Any jewellery containing mixed gemstones should only be cleaned under expert advice.
